Are you ready for this… a love story that begins with two 6th graders, a soccer ball, and an assist. Ian and Greta met in middle school on the soccer field one morning, and by that afternoon they were “dating.” In gym class Greta and Ian kept assisting one another to score during the soccer game. These, wise beyond their years, 6th graders knew that such great teamwork should not be forsaken. And so the dynamic duo, Ian {&} Greta, was established. In high school when they went their separate ways for a bit they were drawn back together by the alphabetical proximity of their last names. This meant they had lockers two down from one another, ensuring they had constant interaction. During their senior year of high school God drew Ian deeper and deeper into himself and gave him many questions to wrestle with. Ian turned to Greta with these questions and as they journeyed together into the Truth their love began to deepen.
Throughout college their relationship flourished… And so it was that during the annual Etherton Family vacation to Maine, Ian grabbed Greta’s hand and asked her to go for a walk. They walked along the gorgeous Maine coastline, and Ian asked Greta what she had been thinking about their relationship and where she thought it would go. Greta replied, “I think we make a great team and we can do greater things on the earth and in God’s kingdom together than we can apart.” That was the confirmation Ian needed, and upon her response he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Ian carefully chose a ring with a green stone called tourmaline… a precious stone from Maine. It represents the uniqueness of their love, souls, and relationship.
And so they were joyfully married in the historic Bethesda United Methodist Church and gathered for the reception with those they love most at the Downes family farm amongst the garden blooms that the ever humble Alice Downes, the brides mother, had planted in celebration of Ian {&} Greta’s covenant together.
And they lived #HappilyEthertonAfter!!!
