Manda Weaver Photography & #WeHeartSBY hosted the 3F City-Scape Portrait Event to capture and celebrate the people who are participating in the budding renaissance our beloved Downtown Salisbury is experiencing. So many of my favorite people stopped by to share a bit of themselves with us this past Third Friday (3F) . I was so moved and honored by the way each of these people allowed me (and ultimately you as well) to see a bit of thier beautiful souls.
It is not easy to be photographed. Somehow, when a lens is aimed in your general direction, you both hate and love it. We are always not quite ready… In that moment when you see that scary black eye fixated on you, all of your worst charachteristics and features leap to the forefront of your mind. I’m not thin enough… My hair isn’t done… My make-up is smudged… My clothes are all wrong… and on and on the thought stream goes. And yet at the same moment you deeply desire to be photographed… you want to be seen. You long to exist in images for the people that love you, for your legacy…You want your beauty to be on display. It’s there… You were born with it, and when the lens focuses on you… you hope it will somehow materialize in the images that will be captured. Despite the running thoughts of “I wish I had” cramming your brain, and exciting your fears. We all love to hate having our picture “taken” (note that we say taken… as if it something precious is being stolen). This my friends is our humanity on full display. Life in the tension.
Much like the City-Scape of Salisbury, a broken place in need of restoration. We are broken people. But also like our city, we are sacred. Designed to reflect the image of God Himself. Inevitabley, as we are repairing this broken and sacred place, restoring it to the beauty it was designed to reflect, we too are being restored bit by bit. As a piece of silver carefully cleaned and polished bears the image of the one who cares for it, we see our refection in this City-Scape. We are the Renaissance.
During this event, I had the pleasure of “shooting” 106 sacred Salsiburians in the alley next to my studio. This is just a small glimpse of those who live, love, and care for this city we’ve been entrusted with. To you who braved my lens, I say “Thank You, It was an absolute pleasure!” I hope that you will enjoy, share, and print these images as a remembrance of this key moment in the history of our city and our lives.
